Monocal, founded in early 2009, is guided by a vision of networking small communities. Too frequently there is a lack of communication between separate organizations in a community, important events are held at different locations at the same time and on the same day. Additionally, many people can find themselves overwhelmed with a barrage of promotions for community events through traditional mediums such as poster campaigns, newspaper ads, and booths. Often, individuals miss events of particular interest to them. It is clear that communities and information are not always self organized. Through effective marketing and communication strategies however, these issues can be overcome.
Starting in the Laurier community, Monocal has developed a web calendar that allows campus organizations to post details about events that they are running. This approach to networking small communities is now being expanded to other university and college campuses as well as other forms of small communities to aid in networking efforts.
